Quick verdict

NEO is the first humanoid robot marketed directly to households rather than factories. It stands 5′6″ tall, weighs about 66 lb, and is wrapped in a soft knitted suit over a lattice-polymer body designed to be safe to be around. The manufacturer offers two ways to get one: a $499/month subscription or an Early Access purchase at $20,000, both reserved with a $200 fully refundable deposit. US deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026.

Our take: the hardware story is genuinely impressive and the safety-first design is the right call for a home product. The open question is autonomy. Early units will rely partly on remote assistance and a limited set of chores, growing over time via software updates. If you are an enthusiast who wants to be part of that journey and can live with a work-in-progress, the refundable deposit is a low-risk way to hold a place in line. If you expect a fully independent housekeeper on day one, wait.

Design and build

Most humanoids are hard metal shells. NEO takes a different route: the entire frame is wrapped in a custom 3D-lattice polymer that acts as padding, and then dressed in a knitted nylon suit. The joints are enclosed, so there are no external pinch points. The manufacturer quotes a Head Injury Criterion (HIC) below 250 — a figure normally associated with very low injury risk in automotive testing.

At 66 lb, NEO is lighter than most adults, which matters if it ever loses balance near a person or piece of furniture. The three colourways (a warm beige, a slate blue-grey and a dark charcoal) are clearly chosen to sit quietly in a living room rather than look like lab equipment.

The stand-out numbers are the hands — 22 degrees of freedom each, which is closer to a human hand than most robotic grippers — and the tendon-drive actuators. Tendon drives trade some precision for low inertia and back-drivability (95% claimed), which is exactly what you want when a machine shares space with people: if you push against it, it gives.

What NEO can actually do

The advertised launch chores are modest and household-oriented: fetching items, opening doors, tidying, putting dishes away, turning off lights, watering plants, and carrying laundry. NEO listens for natural speech and responds through a built-in language model, and the companion app lets you schedule chores, view what the robot sees and talk to it remotely.

The important nuance is how those tasks get done. The manufacturer has been open that early units combine on-board AI (the "Redwood" model) with the ability for trained remote operators to step in for tasks the robot cannot yet complete alone. The capability roadmap is essentially a promise that software will improve over the life of the product. That is a reasonable model for a first-generation device, but it is also the main reason we can't give NEO a higher autonomy score yet.

Simple maths: $499 × 12 = $5,988 per year, so the subscription crosses the $20,000 purchase price after roughly 40 months. If you plan to keep the robot for more than three and a half years, ownership is cheaper — but the subscription gives you an exit if the product does not live up to expectations, and it likely includes upgrades. For a first-generation device we lean toward the subscription for most households; Early Access makes sense for people who want priority delivery and the longer warranty. Safety and privacy

Physical safety is where NEO is strongest on paper: soft body, low mass, back-drivable joints, enclosed pinch points. Privacy is where you should read the fine print. Any robot with always-on cameras and microphones, plus the possibility of remote human assistance, is collecting a great deal of information about your home. NEO ships with a charging dock, a lint roller for the knitted suit, and a travel/storage case. The suit and shoes are machine washable, which sounds trivial until you imagine a robot that lives in your kitchen for years.
